Specific preventative maintenance intervals can vary because operating conditions, vehicle configurations, manufacturer recommendations, mileage, engine hours, and duty cycles are not identical across every truck.
Mileage Is Only One Factor
Mileage is commonly used to establish maintenance intervals, but it does not tell the complete story.
An 18-wheeler traveling primarily on interstate highways experiences different operating conditions from a truck making frequent stops, spending substantial time idling, operating on construction sites, or hauling heavy loads through urban traffic.

Oil lubricates moving components, helps control heat, suspends contaminants, and provides protection between metal surfaces. Over time, oil can become contaminated and its protective characteristics can change.
Oil filters capture contaminants circulating through the lubrication system, while fuel and air filters perform separate roles in protecting engine operation.
Service intervals depend on engine specifications, lubricant type, operating conditions, and manufacturer recommendations.

The braking system on an 18-wheeler operates under substantial loads.

An 18-wheeler places substantial demands on tires.
Inflation pressure, tread depth, alignment, load distribution, road conditions, and suspension condition can all influence tire wear.
Uneven wear patterns may also provide information about conditions elsewhere on the truck.
A tire wearing differently on one edge, for example, may indicate an alignment, suspension, or steering issue rather than a problem involving only the tire.
