Calumet Electronics’ Innovative New Facility is a Welcome Sign for U.S. Microelectronics Manufacturing
WASHINGTON, DC, UNITED STATES, September 3, 2026 /EINPresswire.com/ — The Printed Circuit Board Association of America (PCBAA) celebrates Calumet Electronics’ recently opened state-of-the-art Ultra-High-Definition Interconnect (UHDI) printed circuit board (PCB) facility. This is also the nation’s first dedicated panel level organic substrate facility.
UHDI PCBs are needed for next generation AI chips and high-performance computing in data centers, enterprise cloud servers, advanced medical devices, avionics, military drones and other military and industrial products. UHDI design allows more components to occupy smaller spaces, reduces the number of layers, and shortens signal paths for better signal integrity.
“What Calumet has done in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan is an example of the power of American innovation. Their focus and determination are helping reverse many years of offshoring,” said David Schild, Executive Director of PCBAA. “The U.S. needs trusted and secure PCBs, and Calumet is making a difference.”
Calumet’s new facility was made possible by a $39.9 million grant via the Defense Production Act Investment (DPAI) program and is the third U.S. UHDI PCB facility built in the past three years.
In 2023, GreenSource Fabrication LLC received $46 million from the DPAI program. The award enhanced existing production capabilities for state-of-the-art integrated circuits (IC) substrate, high-density interconnect (HDI) and UHDI, and advanced packaging.
In June 2026 TTM Technologies opened a new UHDI PCB manufacturing facility in Syracuse, New York — marking a significant investment in domestic defense electronics manufacturing. The plant makes electronics for the domestic defense and aerospace industries. The company’s UHDI printed circuit boards are used for radar, missile defense and other weapons systems. The project was made possible by TTM investment along with financial and tax assistance from New York State and a grant from the Department of Defense for this $130 million plant expansion.
TTM is also investing a planned $50 million in a new TTM Innovation Center in Eau Claire, Wisconsin.
“Seeing this positive news about American PCB manufacturing is encouraging but is still not at scale. Asian nations are consistently investing billions in PCB manufacturing,” said Schild. “Our national and economic security depends on strong action to reduce dependence on other countries. For more American companies to do what Calumet, Greensource and TTM have done, the U.S. government must continue to fund the DPAI and other financial programs to support the defense industrial base and supporting critical infrastructure sectors.”
