A seven-day sample found legacy account signals on 10.0% of identified paid-theme domains, compared with 2.1% of free-theme domains.
TRONDHEIM, NORWAY, September 7, 2026 /EINPresswire.com/ — StoreInspect has released a September analysis of public Shopify customer account signals, finding that legacy account modes were more common on domains classified as using paid themes than on those using free themes.
Among domains with an identified legacy or newer account mode, legacy signals appeared on 1,613 of 16,084 paid-theme domains, or 10.0%. The corresponding figure for free themes was 1,204 of 57,628 domains, or 2.1%. The paid-theme group’s legacy share was approximately 4.8 times as high.
The Shopify customer accounts study used retained observations dated August 29 through September 4, 2026. It covered 107,048 domains in StoreInspect’s database, excluding domains already marked confirmed dead. Of those, 86,501 had an identified legacy or newer account mode, including 4,236 legacy detections. The other 20,547 had inconclusive checks, failed requests, or an unavailable account entry point and were excluded from the account-mode comparison.
The findings come after Shopify’s February 26 deprecation announcement and its July 30 requirement for new themes and updates submitted to the Shopify Theme Store to include the newer account component. Shopify’s deprecation announcement says that upgrading a legacy-account store to a theme without legacy account templates automatically switches it to newer customer accounts.
For agencies preparing theme updates, the study provides a starting point for checking account dependencies. Theme classification alone does not establish whether a merchant has custom account features, needs migration help, or plans to purchase services.
StoreInspect also rechecked 64 sampled domains in a browser on September 5. All 20 sampled legacy detections displayed a Shopify legacy customer login form, while all 20 sampled newer-account detections reached newer account flows. The remaining checks examined unresolved or unavailable results. No customer login was submitted.
The sample reflects StoreInspect’s collection activity, not a random sample of all Shopify merchants. Counts refer to domains rather than unique businesses. Theme groups use stored classifications, and the study does not measure migration rates, account usage, or reasons for retaining legacy accounts. The full study includes denominators, exclusions, browser-check findings, and migration considerations.
