Archetype AI, a Physical AI company operating as a product-led frontier lab, today announced that it has been named to Fast Company’s Next Big Things in Tech list in the Foundational AI category, recognizing Newton, its world model for understanding the physical world through real-time sensor data.
The recognition comes as Archetype AI takes an increasingly active role in the industry conversation around Physical AI and how AI systems can move beyond digital environments to understand and operate across real-world machines, infrastructure and environments. This month, CEO and co-founder Ivan Poupyrev will join leaders from across AI, robotics and venture capital at TechCrunch Disrupt 2026, taking place Oct. 13-15; and Long Horizon: The Physical AI Summit, taking place Oct. 20-21, to discuss the next phase of Physical AI development and deployment.
“AI has made enormous progress understanding the digital world, but most of the economy still operates in the physical world, through machines, infrastructure, environments and systems that generate vast amounts of sensor data,” said Poupyrev. “We built Newton to give AI the ability to understand that world. Fast Company’s recognition, along with the growing industry conversation around Physical AI, reflects how quickly this field is moving from research toward real-world deployments.”
Newton interprets sensor data, video and operational context to understand how machines, processes and sites are behaving. Because it learns general patterns of physical behavior, the same underlying intelligence can be applied across different machines, processes, and sites without requiring a separate AI model for every use case. Built on Newton, Newton Agents help organizations uncover hidden operating conditions, identify emerging issues and act earlier to improve machine reliability, optimize process performance and scale workforce expertise.
Fast Company’s annual Next Big Things in Tech list recognizes breakthrough technologies with the potential to transform industries and shape the future. This year’s honorees span across established companies, startups and research teams developing technologies with the potential for significant long-term impact.
Advancing the Physical AI Conversation
The recognition comes ahead of two significant industry appearances for Poupyrev, an award-winning inventor and former technology leader at Google’s Advanced Technology and Projects (ATAP) group.
At TechCrunch Disrupt 2026, Poupyrev will participate in the breakout session, “Physical AI Isn’t a Model Problem. It’s an Execution Problem,” alongside Ethan Batraski, Partner at Venrock, and Ian Rountree, General Partner at Cantos. The discussion will explore what separates Physical AI systems that describe the world from those capable of closing the loop from perception to decision, action and verification.
At Long Horizon: The Physical AI Summit, Poupyrev will join the panel “Will World Models Eat Physical AI?” He will appear alongside Eric Chan, Co-founder and CTO of Rhoda AI, Ashish Kapoor, CEO of General Robotics, and Samir Menon, CEO of Dexterity to discuss the role of world models in the future of robotics and Physical AI, including their impact on real-world data needs, and how they may fit into the future architecture of robot intelligence.
“Physical AI shouldn’t be limited to a single robot, machine or narrowly defined task,” Poupyrev said. “The bigger opportunity is to bring intelligence to the machines, infrastructure and systems that already exist, giving them the ability to understand changing conditions and respond in real time.”

About Archetype AI
Archetype AI is the Physical AI company, helping humanity make sense of the real world. Founded by AI and technology leaders from Google, it created Newton, a world model for the physical world that learns how machines and operations actually behave directly from sensor data, adapting across many machines and sites without a custom model for each. Companies across manufacturing, energy, and infrastructure — including Fortune Global 500 leaders — use ready-to-deploy Newton Agents, or build their own on the Archetype Platform, to predict failures, extend equipment life, and capture expertise.
